Ch-Ch-Changes

Posted by Gavin Bowman on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at 11:15 AM

In the first of several changes to the setup here, I'm going to be moving the hosting of this domain to another host over the next few days. So, if everything goes wrong, this blog might be down for a while. It should be back up and running in time for next monday's digest post, but if not, you have my apologies in advance :).

Future changes may or may not include a change of url for the blog, and a switch to WordPress. That'll depend on how well this goes, and whether I manage to get around to it.

Fingers crossed...

Just curious why you're considering a change to WordPress.

I'm using it and wondering if I should switch because performance is a real issue (see Jeff Atwood's post: Behold WordPress, Destroyer of CPUs )

Hi Louis. It's been a long time since I looked into blogging software, but when I did, WordPress seemed to have the best reputation and features.

Blogger was the only thing my hosting package would support back when I started this blog. So it's really a basic case of historical tech envy: I want to switch to WordPress because that's what I really wanted 3 years ago...

I haven't really thought about the performance issue, but I will do some reading and catching up before seriously considering switching.

Thanks Gavin, for responding to my curiousity.

In your case, your Blog is the primary focus of your site, and I think you have one of the most beautiful, well-layed out blogs that I have ever seen. Blogger seems to have been fine for you, unless there are some technical issues under the hood causing you problems that I don't know of.

WordPress, ultimately, could do what Blogger does, but to customize it to exactly the way you want (and you will find a few really nice things you'll be missing that you've already got in Blogger), you'll be sucked into a wormhole that will take months until you're satisfied. I spent 4 months customizing WordPress/bbPress to my liking - 4 months I could have better spent on my program.

But if you're interested in the technology, messing with PHP and mySQL and getting good at them, then converting to WordPress would be a great exercise.

And thank you, Gavin, for your blog, especially your weekly Micro ISV digest which always leads me to very interesting, relevant and useful articles.

Wow, thanks Louis.

The lack of trackbacks has always been a major downside of blogger, but to be honest, I'm not sure whether they are all that important to me anymore.

The thought of 4 months of tweaking my blog definitely doesn't appeal, I'm a very inconvience-averse person.

I'll give it serious thought before making any changes :).
